Storm King Art Center
About object

Storm King Art Center is located in Mountainville, New York, in the Hudson Valley, where expansive meadows, rolling hills, and wooded areas provide a setting for large‑scale outdoor sculpture. The institution was founded in 1960 by Ralph E. Ogden and later developed together with H. Peter Stern.

The sculpture park covers about 200 hectares, making it one of the largest of its kind in the United States. Its collection includes more than 100 sculptures and earthworks by major 20th‑ and 21st‑century artists. Artists represented at Storm King include Alexander Calder, Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi, Louise Nevelson, David Smith, Mark di Suvero, Richard Serra, Andy Goldsworthy, Maya Lin and many others whose works explore scale, material, and the relationship between art and nature.

The park’s extensive grounds allow artworks to be placed in open meadows, on hillsides, or near wooded areas, with each piece positioned to respond to the surrounding environment.
