Hakone Open-Air Museum
About object

Hakone Open Air Museum, established in 1969 in the mountainous region of Hakone, was Japan's first open air museum dedicated to modern and contemporary sculpture. Its 70,000 square meter parkland offers a distinctive blend of art, geothermal landscape, and Japanese aesthetics.

Set among hot springs, cedar forests, and drifting mountain fog, the museum's outdoor spaces create an ever changing backdrop for more than 120 sculptures. Many works invite physical interaction, reflecting Japan's tradition of engaging the body as well as the eye.

The Picasso Pavilion, which houses over 300 works and forms one of the most significant Picasso collections in Asia. Visitors can also explore unique architectural installations such as the stained glass Symphonic Sculpture tower or Toshiko Horiuchi MacAdam's hand woven Woods of Net, designed as a climbable textile environment.

Hakone's experience is shaped by the senses: shifting weather, forest scents, thermal pools, and panoramic mountain views all influence how art is perceived. The sculpture park stands out not only for its collection, but for the way nature, climate, and creativity merge into a single, fluid experience.
